June 12
Greetings from Naden Habour! Our fleet of Gradys have been doing well here, trolling from Bird 1 to Bird 2 early in the morning. Green point has been doing well during the afternoons trolling deep around the 140ft mark. Majority of the fish caught are within the 14-25lb range and to date, the biggest fish caught is a respectable 41 pounder
caught and released by Masset House Guide Kirt Holland. Forecast calls for more Westerly winds this week and the weather will continue to be mild and sunny. Most of the guides here have been successful using a variety of teaser heads and flashers along with a weighted rod hanging off the back, trolling at about 2-2.5 knots. Halibut fishing
has been very good around Klashwun Rock but majority of the halibut caught trolling for salmon around Parker Point close to the kelp beds. There has been confirmed reports of coho showing up around Green Point and very soon the fishing will be pick up in numbers and also increase in weight class! There is still some spots available for the
summer and if you are interested in doing a fishing trip, please give us a call at our Richmond offices.

Rig Up

Wow, the summer season is approaching fast and we are all excited to be fishing in Naden Habour with Queen Charlotte Lodge.

The cutthroat fishing form the beach has been incredible! Large numbers of salmon fry concentrate along the slow sloping shores and the cutties are very aggressively chasing them down.

This year is going to be a great year for fishing as the salmon forecast for the north coast looks promising. Local reports also indicate that there is a fair amount of feeder chinooks caught at the Masset Inlet already. For those who have been thinking about learning saltwater flyfishing for cohos, our fly fish expert, Roger Baker will get you started. I think it is an incredible deal to go for a fishing trip and learn to flyfish for free from the pros! And if you don't have your own gear, you can rent and test high end rods and reels at our pro shop!

As for the foodies, Executive Chef Ryan MacKay will be leading his team of chefs to provide you with incredible meals prepared from the freshest local ingredients available. If you are interested in getting away from the daily grind and wishing that you were fishing instead, give us a call at our offices and we will be glad to help you plan your next fishing trip of a life time.

MAR 23 2009

Early March has been phenomenal! Anglers have been rewarded with beautiful weather and hard fighting fish, using small pink flies or loonie sized roe sacks, fishing under structures like log jams and overhanging trees. Deep pools and undercut banks are the best places to target fish when the sun hits the water in the afternoon. This chrome steelie was caught around March 7th which means that fishing will still be fairly good till the end of the month. With normal fluctuating temperatures and water levels, I would expect to see more fresh fish entering the system over the next few weeks.
As we wrap up the steelhead season, our stats for this year indicate the guest hook up for the season is up 20% and with a lower number of guests than previous year, this means only one thing....MORE FISH. November, December and January saw the most fish while February and March remains to be the same due to similar weather patterns. Winter time in the Queen Charlottes is quite beautiful and strong northeast winds are ideal for surfers and clam picking. Two days ago, the same winds washed up razor clams on to the beach as far as the eye can see on Northbeach and I am still cleaning totes of theses plump morsels.
This year, Masset House is pleased to be operating from Naden Harbor and fishing alongside the QCL fleet. Our premium Grady Whites, will still remain to be our flagship fleet, a comfortable and superior fishing machine for any type of weather and is available to any angler who opts for comfort and performance. We look forward to seeing you in Naden and tight lines! Visit us again soon for an early summer fishing report from Dixon Entrance

STEELHEAD FISHING REPORT - MASSET HOUSE - 18 FEBRUARY 2009
Posted By mhadmin - Fri Feb 27th, 2009 - Filed under: General

Early February fishing conditions were unstable due to heavy snowfall and fluctuating temperatures caused the rivers to blow out quickly but come back into shape the next day. Fishing seemed to pick up during these brief periods of temperature and precipitation changes. The fish seemed more willing to move away from resting spots to hit roe, presented on a short float presentation than a swinging fly. However, the fly anglers report that the fish are hitting very hard at the end of the swing above riffles and choppy water. Successful flyfisherman were using "Pink Rockstars" and marabou flies with orange and white combinations.
Most of the fish caught were in the 8 to 10lb range and a monster was landed in early Feburary which taped out at 41.5 inches! The cutthroat have been elusive but they are much larger this year!
The high pressure off the west coast Charlottes will bring clear skies over the next few days. Unfortunately it would mean that the water levels would drop and present tough fishing conditions over the next week.
Scallops have been washing in at North Beach! Yumm. Time to go!

Steelhead Report - Masset House - 28 January 2009
Posted By mhadmin - Wed Jan 28th, 2009 - Filed under: General

The high pressure systems hanging over the Charlottes last week resulted in optimal conditions for the river systems but fish numbers were getting sparse as there were no fresh fish entering the rivers.  Most of the fish caught showed a tinge of colour but still were good strong fighters.
Yesterday, the Charlottes got hit with strong winds and heavy precipitation and mixed with snow in the higher elevations.  The runoff caused the river to rise sharply, peaking at noon yesterday and it now looks like the levels are coming down nicely - which will mean that I will not be in this week end!
The fishing up to then was still good but now after this heavy rain, I expect loads of hungry Steelhead entering the system. Enough said - Game on!

Steelhead Report - Masset House - 24 January 2009
Posted By mhadmin - Sat Jan 24th, 2009 - Filed under: General
Steelhead season this year started off with perfect weather conditions and minimal fishing pressure in November. The fish were hard hitting and there were some monsters in the 40 inch class lurking around. The mid-November fishing was surprisingly good for our guests working the fly. Masset House anglers opting to spey fish were fairly successful using marabou flies in the peach and white combinations.  For those using roe, it was heart-stopping to watch your short float set up getting smacked by fish at every pool. The river conditions were up and down due to normal coastal precipitation during this time of the year but this helped to push fresh fish upstream on a regular basis.  By the end of November, we were fully into prime time for the first of many runs of hard fighting chrome Steelhead.

December fishing was slightly slower than previous years due to a cold snap which caused the rivers to drop in levels and increase in clarity. Soon the conditions were worsened by a huge snow storm which covered up much of the Charlottes in 2-4 feet of snow. By mid-January, the river was back into shape, but un-fished for most of the time due to roads not being ploughed nor maintained. In the new year, we were the first ones back at the river fishing.  We tied the chains on our 2008 F250 and hit the river.  We won the battle on the roads but lost more than our share of the untouched fish in the river! These fish fought hard and long, even those in the 8-10 pound class.  Water levels have stabilised over the past week and good numbers of fish are holding in the river.  The temperature is hanging just below freezing and there hasn't been significant precipitation in the past 5 days.  Time to go fishing!
